(Sardinops sagax)
The general appearance of this species is not unlike that of the common sardine,the body is tapered and cylindrical in section.On the branchial operculum there are some characteristic radial bone striations that allow to distinguish S.sagax from all the other Clupeidae living in the areal.On the belly are the scutelli,or the hardened scales typical of clupeids. The back has a blue-greenish color,the sides and abdomen are whitish.On the sides there are 1 to 3 longitudinal rows of black points. It reaches the length of 40 cm,the average size is about 20 cm.The known maximum weight is less than 500 grams
