Description

Latimeria menadoensis is the second present species in the order of tulip fish.It was discovered on September 18,1997 by Arnaz Mehta Erdmann, who is the wife of the American naturalist Mark V.Erdmann,in Sulawesis Lake, north of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, and was described in 1999 by a research team. Before that, the tulip fish ( Latimeria chalumnae ),which was found in 1938 in the sea east of southern Africa, was considered the only surviving bivalve fish. The species is about 140 cm tall and lives in the sea near rocky coastlines 150 to 200 meters below the water surface, probably even deeper. The fish have the same morphological characteristics as the blue-haired herbaceous star but are characterized by a brown color. The genetic differences between species are quite clear by 4.1%.In 2009,a Japanese research team filmed Latimeria Menadoensis in its field of coverage.
