Description

Batomys granti is a rodent from the genus Batomys that occurs in the mountains of Luzon.Morphologically,the species is very similar to Batomys salomonseni from Mindanao and surrounding islands.Little is known about this animal;the population on Mount Isarog,in the south of Luzon,is known from only fifteen animals and that on Mount Data,in the Cordillera Central of northern Luzon,of only five.In addition,the animal is in the barangay Balbalasang in the municipality of Balbalan (province of Kalinga,Cordillera Central),but even there it is rare.B.granti is a medium sized mouse like with a dense,wooly,brown coat.The tail is thick and covered with long brown hair.On the face is a dark,mask-like pattern.The skull has been lengthened somewhat.Around the eyes is an almost hairless ring.This species is mainly active at night.He eats vegetable food,such as seeds,leaves and fruit.
