Description

Weighing about 200 grams in adulthood,the animal has a body measuring 120 to 175 mm from the base of the tail to the point of the head and a tail measuring between 100 and 125 mm.The short,fleshy body is covered with thick fur made of fine,coarse hair and grooved spines,hence its name in English Okinawa Spiny Rat,literally " Okinawa's Spiny Rat ",on the whole body,except the mouth,ears,feet and tail. The fur is brownish in color above the body and greyish white on the underside,slightly orange.The dorsal spines are black and the ventral spines are white tinged with red.The tail is two-colored along its length.
