(Coturnix ypsilophora)
Measure 17-22 cm in length for 75-140 g of weight in males and 85-140 g in females;the wingspan is 26-36 cm.A small,"plump" bird, the brown quail is a nomadic species that varies significantly by color, size and habitat within its vast area of distribution. The color of the plumage varies from reddish-brown chamois to dark gray-black,depending on the subspecies. Some scholars believe that the nominal subspecies of the brown quail,C.y.ypsilophora,should be considered a separate species. If this were the case, the entire taxonomy of this species should be reviewed.
