Description

The Slender Sandpiper or Tringa stagnatilis is a limicola bird.It is a rather small tringa and lives in the open herbaceous steppes and in the humid lands of the taiga of the extreme east of Europe and Central Asia.It resembles the clear Archipelago but is smaller and thinner, with a long, thin beak and long yellowish legs.Like the clear Redshank, its plumage is grayish brown during the breeding season, paler in winter and has a clear strip on the back that is visible during the flight. However,it is more closely related to the Common Sandpiper and Sandpiper bastard (Pereira & Baker,2005).Together,they form a group of small tringas that have reddish or yellowish legs, their breeding plumage is darker with a design of small brown specks on the chest and neck.It is a migratory species, and most of the specimens spend the winter in Africa and India, and a few go as far as Southeast Asia and Australia. They prefer to spend the winter in wet and cool areas such as swamps and lakes and usually move alone or in small groups. They spend their time in shallow waters or wet silt looking for insects and small invertebrates, which are the basis of their diet.Fine Sandpiper is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African and Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds applies.
