Description

Eriosyce occulta is a species of plant in the genus Eriosyce of the cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet occulta means 'hidden, secret'. Eriosyce occulta grows geophytically with hemispherical to spherical shoots and reaches diameters of 3 to 8 centimeters. The root is a large, conical taproot. There are up to 14 ribs, notched and subdivided into rhomboidal protuberances. The areoles on it are sunken. The dark brown to black radial spines, which are slightly curved and lie a little close to the surface of the shoots, can also be missing. The sometimes present, single central spine is 5 to 10 millimeters long. The four to six radial spines are 3 to 11 millimeters long. The funnel-shaped, whitish flowers have a light reddish central stripe and appear from young areoles. They are 2.3 to 4 centimeters long and have the same diameter. Their pericarpel and flower-tube are lined with white wool and twisted bristles. The elongated, red fruits are fleshy and up to 1.5 centimeters long. They open with a basal pore.
