Backeb. and published in Blätter für Kakteenforschung 6. 1938.2 Neobuxbaumia is a genus with 9 species of columnar cacti native to Mexico. Neobuxbaumia occurs in the eastern and southern areas of Mexico. In the habitat, these plants form impressive forests that extend throughout the hills. They are large arborescent species that reach about 15 m in height. The stems are columnar with numerous ribs. As with most tree-like cacti, juvenile plants vary considerably in appearance due to the ratios of spine size to stem size. Younger plants tend to be more strongly spined while older plants will lose spines in the lower parts of the stem or at least the spines are small compared to the size of the stem. The flowers are bell-shaped and can be white or pink; nocturnal The fruits are round with thorns and open when ripe with a white pulp.
